Caraway Seeds

Grayish-brown with ridges and an anise-like aroma.  Caraway is said to have been used in Europe longer than any other condiment and the reason some say it is Europe's first spice.  Caraway is a more aromatic and bitter alternative to cumin, it is key to Indian, Dutch, German, Russian, and Scandinavian cooking. 

 

Origin: Holland

Flavor & Pairing: Flavor is vaguely similar licorice or anise, but tempered with peppery undertones.  

Culinary Uses: Use in cakes, breads, muffins and cookies. Caraway seed also flavors braised meats and vegetables. May also be prepared as tea.
